Michigan investigating Juwan Howard altercation coach
Michigan Wolverines basketball coach Juwan Howard reportedly involved in confrontation with strength coach, rumors of resignation, heart surgery recovery, and defense from teammate.
Michigan Wolverines basketball coach Juwan Howard is reportedly under investigation for a confrontation with strength and conditioning coach Jon Sanderson. Although rumors circulated that Howard would be stepping down, he is still the head coach, according to The Athletic's Brendan Quinn. A fake tweet claimed that Howard would be stepping down and assistant coach Phil Martelli would take over, but this was debunked. Martelli has been filling in as head coach while Howard recovers from a heart procedure, but Howard is still on the bench. Rumors of a fistfight between Howard and someone within the program are unfounded, but there was an altercation with Sanderson that is being reviewed by the university outside of the athletic department. Despite the controversy, former "Fab Five" teammate Jalen Rose defended Howard, stating that he is recovering from open heart surgery and is eager to return to the team. Michigan's victory over Iowa on Sunday improved their Big Ten record to 1-1, but the season has been disappointing overall. The Wolverines' next game is against Eastern Michigan, and there is a possibility that Howard will be back as head coach.
