Dick Smothers Mourns Death of Tom Smothers at 86
Iconic comedian Tom Smothers of the Smothers Brothers passed away at 86. His legacy and impact on comedy will be remembered.
Tom Smothers, one half of the legendary musical comedy duo the Smothers Brothers, passed away on Tuesday, December 26 at the age of 86. The news of his passing was shared in a statement by his brother Dick Smothers, who revealed that Tom had peacefully passed away at his home in Santa Rosa, California after battling cancer. The National Comedy Center also released a press statement on behalf of the family.
Dick Smothers fondly remembered Tom as not only a loving older brother, but also a unique and irreplaceable creative partner. The two had shared a lifetime of experiences both on and off the stage for over 60 years. "Our relationship was like a good marriage - the longer we were together, the more we loved and respected one another. We were truly blessed," said Dick.
Journey Gunderson, the executive director of the National Comedy Center, also paid tribute to Tom, describing him as an extraordinary comedic talent and a true champion for freedom of speech. She highlighted his use of comedy to push boundaries and raise political consciousness.
The Smothers Brothers' show, The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, which aired from 1967 to 1969, was a groundbreaking and controversial platform where Tom and Dick challenged ideas and censorship from CBS. They used the show to critique the Vietnam War and address other important topics. Comedian Steve Martin reflected on the show's rebellious nature, calling it "dangerous" in its own modest way.
Fellow comedian David Steinberg praised Tom's comedic genius, stating that he was only happy when pushing the envelope. Steve Martin added that Tom was a fantastic leader and an inspiration. In recognition of his contributions, Tom was honored with a Commemorative Emmy Award in 2008 for his writing on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. Additionally, both Tom and Dick were inducted into the Television Academy Hall of Fame in 2010.
As we remember the stars and legends we've lost in 2023, Tom Smothers' legacy as a comedic pioneer and fearless advocate for free speech will continue to be celebrated and cherished by fans and fellow comedians alike.
