Queen Latifah Son Motherhood Journey: All About Only Child
Queen Latifah, 53, is a doting mother to her son and has expressed a desire for giving him siblings.
Queen Latifah, at the age of 53, is widely recognized for her extraordinary musical and acting abilities, and she has enjoyed a remarkably successful career. But what many may not realize is that she is also a devoted mother. The "U.N.I.T.Y." singer is a mother to one child, a son, whom she has been raising in her private life. In addition to being a mother to her son, she also took on the role of caregiver for her mother, Rita Owens, after she was diagnosed with a heart condition in 2005, until her mother's passing in 2018.
Queen Latifah has made it a point to keep her son's life as private as possible, once stating, "You don't get that part of me," when asked about her personal life by The New York Times. However, in 2016, she hinted at her desire to start a family, saying, "I think I'm ready. I can't say what God has for me, but you will see. You'll see when I'm lugging the baby on the hip that there is actually a youngin' around here," to E! Online.
After the loss of her mother in 2018, Queen Latifah embraced her new role as a mother and expressed her desire to have more children. She revealed, "I've always envisioned myself with a big family, I'm a late bloomer. I'm a late bloomer with a lot of things and you know -- nobody's perfect. I'm an overachiever in some ways and just like slow as molasses in other ways. I think I kind of needed to grow and mature and get everything kind of taken care of with everything before I was able to really deal with it," during an interview with PEOPLE Now.
Despite becoming a mother later in life, Queen Latifah had experience with babies prior to her son's arrival. In 2017, she shared a heartwarming story of helping two women with babies get through airport security in New York. This experience left her feeling like a natural at caring for babies.
Her son made his first public appearance at a Harlem Globetrotters basketball game at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY, sitting courtside next to his mother when he was around four years old. In 2021, when Queen Latifah accepted the BET Lifetime Achievement Award, she made sure to give her son a shoutout in her closing remarks, expressing her love for him.
Queen Latifah's story is not only one of immense talent and success but also one of love, family, and the joy of motherhood. Her journey as a parent and caregiver has been an inspiring and heartwarming one, showing that her greatest accomplishments are not just in her career, but in the love and care she provides to her family.
