Oft-injured Left-hander Chris Sale Traded to Braves from Red Sox for Infielder Vaughn Grissom
Boston Red Sox pitcher Chris Sale, 34, traded to Atlanta Braves for Vaughn Grissom, with Boston covering part of Sale's salary.
The Boston Red Sox have traded Chris Sale to the Atlanta Braves for infielder Vaughn Grissom. The Red Sox will also be sending cash to the Braves to cover a portion of Sale's $27.5 million salary in 2024, the final guaranteed season of his $160 million, six-year contract.
Sale's time with the Red Sox has been plagued by injuries, including nine trips to the disabled and injured lists due to shoulder and elbow ailments. He underwent Tommy John surgery in 2020 and returned to the mound in 2021. Despite helping the Red Sox win a World Series title in 2018, Sale has only made 56 starts in the last four years, posting a 17-18 record with a 4.86 ERA.
In his time with the Red Sox, Sale had a 46-30 record with a 3.27 ERA in 115 starts and made the All-Star team in his first two seasons. As a 10-year veteran with the right to refuse any trade, Sale joins a Braves rotation that includes Spencer Strider, Max Fried, and Charlie Morton.
In exchange for Sale, the Braves will receive 22-year-old infielder Vaughn Grissom, who has a .287 average with five homers and 27 RBIs over 64 games with Atlanta in the past two seasons. Grissom made his big league debut at Fenway Park in 2022 and hit a two-run homer in his third plate appearance.
This trade marks the end of Sale's injury-filled career with the Red Sox, providing an opportunity for a fresh start with the Braves.
