Broncos safety Delarrin Turner-Yell suffers torn ACL vs. Chargers, to be placed on IR
Broncos coach Sean Payton announced safety Delarrin Turner-Yell's season-ending ACL injury and provided updates on other injured players.
Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton revealed on Monday that safety Delarrin Turner-Yell will be placed on the injured reserve list after sustaining a torn ACL during Sunday's 16-9 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers.
Turner-Yell was forced to exit the game in the first quarter after suffering a knee injury while defending against Chargers wide receiver Derius Davis' 12-yard punt return. Following the game, Turner-Yell was seen in the locker room with crutches and a large brace on his left knee.
While Payton acknowledged that Turner-Yell will be sidelined for the upcoming season finale against the Las Vegas Raiders, he expressed optimism about the status of starting right tackle Mike McGlinchey, who sustained a rib injury with under five minutes remaining in the first quarter. Despite walking off the field under his own power, McGlinchey did not return to the game. Veteran Cam Fleming took over at right tackle in his absence.
"I won't delve into specifics, but we are much more hopeful about him," Payton stated.
Payton also emphasized that the recent injuries and the Broncos' elimination from playoff contention will not alter his approach to the roster for the upcoming matchup against the Raiders.
"We will do everything within our means to win this game. It's that crucial," Payton emphasized. "From the quarterback position to the starting offensive line and the defensive lineup, it's as simple as that."
Regarding the progress of Greg Dulcich's injury, Payton has long been anticipating the return of the second-year tight end, who has been sidelined with hamstring and foot issues. However, after not participating in practice since December 13, it seems that Dulcich's comeback may be postponed.
At this point, the primary focus is on attempting to salvage Dulcich's career, which has been marred by injuries. The former UCLA standout missed the first five games of last season due to a hamstring injury and has experienced two stints on the injured reserve list in 2023 for the same issue.
Following Dulcich's return to practice for the first time since re-aggravating a hamstring injury in mid-October against the Kansas City Chiefs, he was sidelined once again due to swelling and soreness in his foot.
"It's something our medical staff and everyone involved are working diligently on," Payton explained. "Reaching the appropriate weight, strength, and all the factors that contribute to maintaining his health. He's a tremendous worker, so he'll do whatever it takes. We'll have to be patient."
