Elvis, Fishmongers and Seattle Kraken Win Nautical Scene NHL Winter Classic
Marshawn Lynch leads Seattle Kraken off the bus, Elvises enter, and Joey Daccord posts a shutout in the 15th NHL Winter Classic.
The co-owner of the franchise, a former football star, led the way off the bus, followed by players wearing white T-shirts and orange overalls as a nod to the fishmongers at Pike Place Market. A group of Elvis impersonators then made their entrance in white jumpsuits and sunglasses.
The 15th NHL Winter Classic showcased the local culture of both the Seattle Kraken and Vegas Golden Knights. The Kraken went on to win 3-0 in front of a sellout crowd of 47,313, with Joey Daccord securing the first Winter Classic shutout.
The day began with Kraken minority owner Marshawn Lynch leading the team off the bus in outfits inspired by the fishing industry. Seattle's T-Mobile Park was transformed into a maritime landscape, complete with lakes in the outfield, docks leading to the ice, and a shipwreck in center field with the tentacles of a Kraken pulling the ship underwater. Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees Heart performed after the first intermission, and Seattle native Sir Mix-a-Lot performed during the pregame.
The NHL chose the home of the Seattle Mariners for the game, hoping to use the retractable roof for protection from the rainy weather. However, the league got its wish for an open-air game as the fog cleared and a day of sun and clouds covered the ballpark.
Seattle coach Dave Hakstol emphasized the importance of acknowledging the unique environment of the Winter Classic while staying focused on the game.
