Atlanta weather forecast: Severe storms, strong winds to hit Georgia on Tuesday
Severe storms and heavy rain expected in Atlanta on Tuesday. Wind advisory, potential flooding, and risk of tornadoes. Stay updated and prepared.
The FOX 5 Storm Team is closely monitoring a developing storm system that is expected to bring strong to severe thunderstorms to the Southeast on Tuesday. The storm is expected to bring extensive rainfall on Monday and Tuesday as moisture from the Gulf of Mexico moves northward over a warm front.
While Monday is expected to be dry, the chance of rain quickly rises overnight and continues through the first half of Tuesday. Starting at 4 p.m., most of north Georgia will be under a Wind Advisory with winds gusting over 35 miles per hour. In parts of Georgia overnight, winds could reach up to 50 miles per hour at higher elevations, adding to the potential danger from the heavy rain.
According to models from the FOX 5 Storm Team, parts of metro Atlanta could see up to 4 inches of rain during the storm, with the area southeast of Interstate 85 at risk of possible flooding. The combination of heavy rain and wind could create significant disruptions for commuters on Tuesday morning.
As of Monday morning, the severe storm risk appears to be greatest south of Columbus and Macon, but parts around I-85 may experience a level 1 or 2 risk. If warmer air heads further north on Monday night, the severe storm risk could also extend farther north, increasing the chances for damaging winds and the possibility of tornadoes.
The rains and storms are expected to exit to the east in the afternoon, but winds will remain gusty and cold. The FOX 5 Storm Team will continue to monitor this storm and provide the latest updates as they become available. It is important to have weather alerts enabled on your FOX 5 Storm Team App and to follow the team on social media for the latest forecast updates. Stay safe and be prepared for potentially severe weather conditions.
