Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay found unresponsive inside home last month: police docs
Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay was found unresponsive in his home, suspected of an overdose. He has a history of addiction.
Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay was found unresponsive and struggling to breathe at his home in Carmel, Indiana last month in what was suspected to be an overdose, according to records from the Carmel Police Department. Emergency responders were dispatched to assist a male who was unresponsive, breathing, and turning blue at Irsay's home. The male was identified as Irsay, who was unconscious with abnormal breathing and a weak pulse. He was given naloxone and was then taken to a hospital. The police report mentioned that Irsay had been prescribed a number of medications, and that body cameras recorded the incident.
Irsay was seen at a Pittsburgh Steelers game on December 16, but has made few public appearances since then. The Colts stated that he was being treated for a severe respiratory illness and had to skip a planned performance of the Jim Irsay Band in Los Angeles. When asked about his health, the team provided a statement saying that Irsay was recovering and asked for privacy to be respected.
This incident is not the first time Irsay has struggled with addiction. In 2002, he admitted to having an addiction to painkillers that started in 1995, and had sought treatment for his problems. He also revealed in an interview that he had been to rehab at least 15 times and had previously experienced a near-fatal overdose.
In 2014, Irsay was stopped for driving erratically and was found with prescription drugs and a large sum of cash in his car. A toxicology report revealed that he had oxycodone, hydrocodone, and a drug used to treat anxiety in his system. He later pleaded guilty to one misdemeanor count, was fined by the NFL, and served a six-game suspension.
Irsay's struggles with addiction and the recent incident at his home have raised concerns about his health and well-being. It remains to be seen how he will recover from this latest setback and what impact it will have on his role as the owner of the Indianapolis Colts.
