Miami TE Cam McCormick returning for 9th year of college football
Miami tight end Cam McCormick is returning for a ninth college football season, after multiple injuries and surgeries. He's set a new record.
Miami tight end Cam McCormick announced on Thursday that he will be returning for a ninth season of college football, making him the first player to receive a ninth season granted by the NCAA. McCormick's career has been plagued by season-ending injuries, resulting in multiple medical redshirts from the NCAA. Additionally, all players who participated in college athletics in 2020 were granted an extra year of eligibility due to the pandemic.
After spending the first seven seasons of his college career at Oregon, McCormick transferred to Miami for the 2023 season and will continue playing in 2024. Former East Tennessee State linebacker Jared Folks was the NCAA's first eighth-year player when he played for the Bucs in 2021, but McCormick appears to be the first to reach nine seasons, particularly at the major college football level.
Throughout his career, McCormick has undergone at least six surgeries due to football injuries. He missed most of his senior season of high school in 2015 and redshirted after enrolling at Oregon in 2016. Despite playing in all 13 of Oregon's games in 2017, he only appeared in three games over the next four years due to various injuries.
Despite facing numerous setbacks, McCormick persevered through the 2022 season at Oregon, the 2023 season at Miami, and now looks to make a comeback for one more year. Throughout his college career, he has played for five different head coaches and caught passes from six different quarterbacks, including NFL player Justin Herbert.
