Disney Branded Television confirmed on January 18th that the 31-year-old actor and singer, Selena Gomez, will be reuniting with her co-star David Henrie for a "Wizards of Waverly Place" sequel pilot for Disney Channel. This exciting news was first reported by Deadline.
In the pilot, Gomez will be reprising her role as Alex Russo in a guest-starring capacity, while also serving as an executive producer alongside Henrie. Henrie, on the other hand, will be returning as Alex's brother Justin Russo. The sequel's lead will be played by Janice LeAnn Brown, with Alkaio Thiele and Mimi Gianopulos joining the cast as well.
Gomez took to her Instagram stories to express her excitement, sharing an image of Deadline's report along with a throwback shot of her and Henrie from the original series. Henrie also shared his enthusiasm on Instagram, posting a picture of the pilot's script and expressing his excitement for the show's return.
The original "Wizards of Waverly Place" aired from 2007-2012, telling the story of three siblings who inherited magical powers from their family. The sequel will pick up after a mysterious incident at the boarding school WizTech, with Justin Russo now living a normal human life with a wife and two sons. However, his life takes an unexpected turn when a powerful young wizard shows up at his door, forcing him to "embrace his past to ensure the future of the Wizard World."
The pilot is written and executive produced by Jed Elinoff and Scott Thomas, and executive produced by Gary Marsh and Andy Fickman, who will also direct. The return of "Wizards of Waverly Place" is highly anticipated and is set to bring back the magic in 2024.
