Chiefs Ravens score takeaways Kansas City advances Super Bowl fourth time five years
Kansas City Chiefs are heading to the Super Bowl after defeating the Baltimore Ravens. Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce were key.
For the fourth time in five years, the Kansas City Chiefs are heading to the Super Bowl. Patrick Mahomes' club was able to crown themselves AFC champions yet again after heading into M&T Bank Stadium and pulling out a 17-10 victory over the Baltimore Ravens.
The Chiefs started the game strong, forcing a three-and-out on defense and then Mahomes led the offense 86 yards down the field to connect with Travis Kelce for the game's first touchdown. Baltimore struck back with a score of its own, but the Chiefs maintained a 17-7 lead at halftime. Mahomes completed his first 11 passes of the game, while Kelce caught all nine of his targets for 96 yards and a touchdown, setting a pair of NFL records.
The second half saw both defenses show up, with the Ravens squandering scoring opportunities and the Chiefs shutting out the opposition over the final two quarters. The Ravens found themselves within striking distance multiple times but couldn't overcome their offensive struggles. A pivotal moment came at the start of the fourth quarter when a potential touchdown was negated by a fumble and recovery by Kansas City in the end zone.
In the end, Mahomes completed 30 of his 39 passes for 241 yards and a touchdown, while Kelce caught all 11 of his targets for 116 yards and a touchdown. The Chiefs will now await the winner of the NFC Championship between the Detroit Lions and San Francisco 49ers for Super Bowl LVIII on Sunday, Feb. 11.
