Rapper Killer Mike detained at Grammy Awards after winning three awards, including his first in more than two decades.
Killer Mike, the rapper and activist, made headlines at the Grammy Awards on Sunday when he was detained by Los Angeles police after winning three Grammy awards, his first in over two decades. A video posted by The Hollywood Reporter showed Mike being escorted in handcuffs by police at Crypto.com Arena following his wins at the Grammys' Premiere Ceremony.
While a police spokesperson did not provide a name or additional details, they confirmed that a Black male had been detained. A representative for Mike did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Backstage, the 48-year-old rapper reflected on his journey, stating, "The only thing that limits your age is not being truthful about your age or what you're doing." He shared his evolution from a 20-year-old drug dealer to a 48-year-old man full of empathy and sympathy for his past actions.
Mike's first win of the night was for best rap performance for "Scientists & Engineers," which also won best rap song. The single features Andre 3000, Future, and Eryn Allen Kane. This marked his first Grammy win since 2003, when he won for "The Whole World" in the best rap performance by a duo or group category.
As a member of Run the Jewels, Mike, along with producer El-P, has released four critically acclaimed albums. He has also made a name for himself as a social-political activist, speaking out against inequality for Black people and race relations, and becoming a vocal supporter of Sen. Bernie Sanders' 2016 U.S. presidential campaign.
In addition to his music career, Mike has hosted Netflix's "Trigger Warning with Killer Mike," a 2019 documentary series addressing issues affecting the Black community. He has also made an emotional plea to calm a protest against police brutality in Atlanta.
Despite his detainment, Mike's wins at the Grammy Awards and his impactful career as a rapper and activist have solidified his status as a prominent figure in the music industry and beyond.
