Mandalorian actress Gina Carano sues Disney firing
Gina Carano sues Disney over firing from "The Mandalorian" for social media posts. Elon Musk offers support. Carano seeks damages and reinstatement.
Actress Gina Carano filed a lawsuit against Lucasfilm and The Walt Disney Co. over her firing from "The Mandalorian" in 2021. The lawsuit alleges that Carano was wrongfully terminated over controversial posts she made on social media, including comparing the American political climate to Nazi Germany and mocking transgender people and mask-wearing during the COVID pandemic.
In her lawsuit, Carano claimed that she was targeted for her opinions and that her words were twisted to demonize and dehumanize her. She also made references to the "Star Wars" world, alleging that the companies demanded compliance with a specific ideology and did not tolerate questioning or non-compliance.
The lawsuit states that Carano's posts were made while she was off-duty and away from the workplace, and she alleges that she was fired for voicing her own opinions and standing up to online bullying. Elon Musk offered to fund the legal bill for people unfairly treated by their employers due to social media activity, and Carano replied that she thought she qualified.
X Corp confirmed that it is aiding Carano in her lawsuit as a commitment to free speech and the ability to work without bullying, harassment, or discrimination. Musk also commented on Carano's suit, offering to join the lawsuit against Disney.
Carano is seeking compensatory damages to be determined at trial and a court order to be recast on the show, as well as punitive damages. She expressed a desire to continue her passion for storytelling and clear her name from the lies and labels that have been stuck on her. Disney and Lucasfilm have not yet responded to requests for comment, and at the time of her firing, a Lucasfilm spokesperson called Carano's posts "abhorrent and unacceptable."
