Boston Celtics criticized for false narrative about Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown not meeting Larry Bird
Spotrac's Keith Smith calls out irresponsible coverage of the Boston Celtics, blasting false narratives and negative media push. All-Star Game disappoints.
Keith Smith from Spotrac is frustrated with the irresponsible coverage of the Boston Celtics by some members of the media. He specifically called out the false narrative that Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown are at fault for not having met Larry Bird before the 2024 All-Star Game, labeling it as "stupid, disingenuous, and ignorant."
Smith pointed out that there is a segment of the Boston media, and media in general, that thrives on negative coverage. He emphasized that the narrative about Tatum and Brown not meeting Larry Bird is simply another attempt to create a negative storyline. He clarified that Bird was still working for the Pacers when Tatum and Brown started, and that Bird has made it clear he wants to stay out of the limelight and enjoy his retirement.
He also criticized the 2024 All-Star Game, noting that it was the least popular exhibition the NBA has put on. The game drew criticism on social media, and even NBA Commissioner Adam Silver seemed uncomfortable giving credit to the Eastern Conference team for breaking the all-time scoring record in the game. Smith highlighted various lowlights from All-Star Weekend, including Anthony Edwards' poor showing in the Skills Competition and questionable commentary from Kenny "The Jet" Smith during Sabrina Ionescu's 3-point shoot-out with Steph Curry.
Looking ahead, Smith suggested that change is likely coming, especially with the NBA's In-Season Tournament now a reality. He proposed that the league could move away from having a mid-February "classic" altogether and instead stage the Slam Dunk Contest and 3-point contest the night before the In-Season Tournament's championship game. This could potentially revitalize the All-Star Weekend and create a more engaging experience for fans.
