Robert Downey Jr. wins outstanding male actor at SAG Awards for 'Oppenheimer', thanking his wife and poking fun at fellow nominees.
Robert Downey Jr. was awarded outstanding performance by a male actor in a supporting role at the 30th Screen Actors Guild Awards. He won for his role in 'Oppenheimer' and was up against other talented nominees including Sterling K. Brown, Willem Dafoe, Robert De Niro, and Ryan Gosling. During his acceptance speech, Downey humorously mentioned that he will never tire of hearing his own voice, before thanking his director and recognizing his wife, Susan Downey, for her unwavering support over the last 22 years.
This marks Downey's third nomination at the SAG Awards, with his previous nomination dating back to 2009 for his role in Tropic Thunder. In 'Oppenheimer', he played Admiral Lewis Strauss, the primary antagonist to Cillian Murphy's J. Robert Oppenheimer. The film explores the moral and emotional dilemmas of creating the atomic bomb. Downey's successful awards season began with a win at the 2024 Golden Globes, where he also expressed his gratitude for his wife's support and influence on his career.
Fellow nominee Sterling K. Brown, known for his role in 'This Is Us', has also seen success at the SAG Awards, winning outstanding actor in a drama series in 2018. In 'Oppenheimer', Brown delivered a nuanced performance as a newly out gay man, adding depth to the dramedy.
