Tetris-inspired floorplan transformation creates courtyard home in Hackney Wick
Couple transforms rundown bungalow into stunning home; saves money by doing renovations themselves, creating dream space. #HomeTransformation #DIY #DreamHome
Clare Charman and James Curtis fell in love with a property at first sight, a late Sixties bungalow in Hackney Wick, London. Despite its outdated features, the couple saw its potential and were drawn to its outdoor space, great transport links, and proximity to green spaces. After winning a bidding war, they embarked on a renovation project that saw them completely transform the property's layout and design.
The couple, both creative professionals, decided to take on the renovation themselves to put their own stamp on the bungalow. With Curtis' background in graphic design, they were able to create detailed plans and project-manage the renovation, saving money in the process. It was a challenging decision to remain in their rented flat while paying a mortgage on the bungalow, but they calculated that it would speed up the renovation process.
The renovation focused on creating an open-plan, indoor-outdoor living space that maximized natural light and flow. The couple drew inspiration from their travels in Japan and Berlin, incorporating elements of Japanese calm and simplicity, as well as Berlin's brutalist style, into the design. They also utilized raw, natural materials and bespoke details to give the space a unique character.
The courtyard garden became the focal point of the property, with the couple raising it to be on a level with the interior and creating a seamless link between the indoor and outdoor spaces. The garden features reclaimed York stone, wild planting, and a pair of oak benches, providing a versatile and dynamic outdoor space for socializing and relaxation.
The renovation project was a labor of love for Charman and Curtis, and while they are thrilled with the results, they see the bungalow as a stepping stone to future projects. The couple's dedication to creating a unique, personalized space is evident in every detail of the renovated bungalow, which now serves as a testament to their creativity and vision.
