A technical glitch caused widespread login problems for several hours on Meta's Facebook, Instagram, Threads, and Messenger platforms on Tuesday. Andy Stone, Meta's head of communications, acknowledged the issues on X, formerly known as Twitter, and stated that the company had resolved the problem quickly for those affected, apologizing for any inconvenience caused. Users reported being unable to access their Facebook accounts and feeds, with Threads and Instagram not refreshing properly. WhatsApp, also owned by Meta, appeared to be unaffected by the issue. A senior official from the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency stated that there was no specific election or malicious cyberactivity nexus to the outage. The outage occurred just before the deadline for Big Tech companies to comply with the European Union's new Digital Markets Act. Meta is implementing changes to comply with the Act, such as allowing users to separate their Facebook and Instagram accounts to prevent personal information from being combined for targeted advertising. It is unclear if the outage is related to any preparations Meta may be making for the DMA. In 2021, Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp experienced hours-long outages due to faulty changes on routers coordinating network traffic between data centers. The following year, WhatsApp experienced another brief outage. Copyright 2024 The Associated Press. All rights reserved.
