Reports Russell Wilson signing one-year deal with Steelers
Russell Wilson signs one-year deal with Steelers after meeting with team, will have Broncos pay $38 million of salary.
After meeting with the Steelers and the New York Giants, quarterback Russell Wilson has reportedly decided to sign a one-year deal with Pittsburgh. This news was reported by multiple media outlets on Sunday night. Wilson, who is 35 years old, will be teaming up with Steelers coach Mike Tomlin and new offensive coordinator Arthur Smith. According to an ESPN report, Wilson, a former Super Bowl champion and nine-time Pro Bowl quarterback, will be signing a team-friendly deal. This deal will result in his former team, the Denver Broncos, paying $38 million of his salary.
Upon hearing the news, Wilson took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to share a video of Steelers fans along with the caption "Year 13. Grateful." With this move, Wilson will be joining Kenny Pickett, the Steelers' 2022 first-round pick, as the team's only quarterbacks under contract. Mason Rudolph, who started three games and led Pittsburgh to the playoffs in 2023, is set to become a free agent.
Earlier in the week, the Broncos granted Wilson permission to seek a new team before they officially release him at the start of the 2024 NFL league year on Wednesday. The Broncos are facing a significant dead-cap hit of $85 million, but they can save money if Wilson signs a new deal elsewhere. Wilson was benched for the final two games of the 2023 season to avoid triggering guarantees in his contract. In his two seasons with the Broncos, he had an 11-19 record in 30 starts.
During his time with the Seattle Seahawks, Wilson led the team to two Super Bowls, winning Super Bowl XLVIII in 2014. He won 104 regular-season games as a starter in Seattle and has amassed 43,653 passing yards with 334 touchdowns and 106 interceptions in 188 career games. Additionally, he has rushed for 5,307 yards and 29 touchdowns. Wilson's experience and leadership will undoubtedly be valuable assets to the Pittsburgh Steelers as they look to make a push for the playoffs in the upcoming season.
