Jonathan Majors avoids jail time after domestic violence conviction, loses Marvel role. Sentenced to counseling. Saga cost him prime superhero role.
US actor Jonathan Majors received a sentence on Monday that included a year of domestic violence counseling, but he managed to avoid jail time after being found guilty of assaulting and harassing his former girlfriend. This incident led to him losing a major role in Marvel's superhero blockbusters.
Marvel decided to drop the 34-year-old Majors, known for his role as Kang the Conqueror, after his conviction in December 2023. He had made his debut as Kang in "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania" earlier that year and was expected to appear in future Avengers films.
In a New York court on Monday, Majors was ordered to attend 52 weeks of in-person domestic violence programming and therapy. Virtual counseling was also an option if he were to secure a job outside of Los Angeles, where he resides. Violating the terms of his sentence could result in jail time.
The incident that led to Majors' conviction occurred in March 2023 during a confrontation with his then-partner Grace Jabbari in Manhattan. The court heard that the altercation began when Majors received a text message and Jabbari tried to take his phone, suspecting it was from another woman. The situation escalated into a physical struggle.
Majors was found guilty of assault in the third degree and harassment in the second degree. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg described the evidence presented during the trial as showing a pattern of psychological and emotional abuse.
Jonathan Majors rose to fame with his role in "The Last Black Man in San Francisco" in 2019 and went on to appear in projects like Spike Lee's "Da 5 Bloods" and the HBO series "Lovecraft Country," which earned him an Emmy nomination.
