Bryson DeChambeau early Masters lead
DeChambeau takes lead at Masters with birdie on 15th hole, Fox tied; weather delay impacts play, Woods tees off Friday.
Bryson DeChambeau took the lead in the mid-afternoon at the Masters after birdying the par-5 15th hole, breaking a tie with Ryan Fox of New Zealand. Fox had an eagle on the par-5 eighth hole and held a clean card until a bogey on No. 13 dropped him into a tie at 4 under par. However, DeChambeau's sixth birdie of the round moved him to 5 under for the day.
The first golfer to finish an under-par round was Erik van Rooyen of South Africa, ending at 1 under. He was 4 under through 13 holes before struggling down the stretch. The weather-delayed first round of the 88th Masters finally began in late morning after a 2 1/2-hour delay. Many golfers had yet to start their rounds and some won't finish until Friday.
Danny Willett of England, through 16 holes, and Byeong Hun An of South Korea, through 12 holes, were two shots behind at 3 under. Willett posted the first birdie of the tournament on the first hole. Defending champion Jon Rahm of Spain started in the afternoon and was 2 under through nine holes, with a birdie on the par-4 third hole and back-to-back birdies on Nos. 7 and 8.
Will Zalatoris, the 2021 Masters runner-up, had a remarkable chip-in from less than 10 yards off the green to save par on the fifth hole. Five-time champion Tiger Woods had his tee time pushed back and will not finish the first round until Friday, starting at 3:54 p.m.
