CBS News poll: Increasing American support for Biden to urge Israel to cease Gaza actions

Growing number of Americans urge Biden to intervene in Israel-Gaza conflict as his approval ratings drop, particularly among younger demographics.

An increasing number of Americans are urging President Joe Biden to push for an end to military actions in Gaza by Israel, as his handling of the situation has reached its lowest approval levels yet.

In a recent poll conducted prior to Iran's drone and missile attack on Israel, there was not a strong desire among the U.S. public for military action against Iran in the event of an attack on Israel. Instead, many Americans would prefer to see the U.S. support Israel in its response.

President Biden is facing significant pressure within his own party regarding the Israel-Hamas conflict, as Democrats are increasingly expressing sympathy for the Palestinian people in addition to the Israelis. This sentiment is particularly strong among younger Americans, contributing to the decline in approval of Biden's handling of the situation.

While the majority of Americans sympathize to some extent with both the Israeli and Palestinian people, there has been a notable increase in the percentage of Democrats who express a lot of sympathy for the Palestinian people compared to last fall.

Despite this, a large majority of Americans across party lines still express at least some level of sympathy for the Israeli people. However, the percentage of those who sympathize "a lot" has decreased since October, following Hamas' terror attacks.

There has also been a shift in views on providing weapons and supplies to Israel, with fewer Democrats and independents supporting such actions compared to last fall. This view remains a majority among Republicans. Additionally, there is growing support for sending humanitarian aid to Palestinians, although most Republicans still oppose this.

Many Americans believe that the conflict between Israel and Hamas will lead to an increase in terrorism threats for both Israel and the United States. Furthermore, there is a perception among the public that the U.S. government is not doing enough to bring American hostages home.

The handling of the Israel-Hamas conflict is seen as reflecting on various aspects of the United States, including its morals, principles, security, and strategic interests. However, in terms of political impact, the economy remains a more significant factor for President Biden's overall approval ratings among Democrats and independents.

Despite some fluctuations, Biden's overall approval ratings have remained in the low 40s, with a slight decline in approval among younger Americans. The recent drop in approval ratings for his handling of the Israel-Hamas conflict adds to the challenges he faces in maintaining public support.
