Portage Michigan tornado destruction mobile homes injures 12

Tornado hits mobile home community in Michigan, injuring residents. Woman rescued, no fatalities reported. Governor declares state of emergency.

A devastating tornado wreaked havoc on Pavilion Estates Mobile Home Community in Pavilion Township, causing injuries to around a dozen residents. Reports indicate that a woman was trapped inside her destroyed home, requiring rescue and hospitalization. Her husband, who was outside during the tornado, also sustained injuries and was taken to the hospital for treatment. The extent of the damage is still being assessed, but thankfully, there have been no reported fatalities.

Nick Armold, the director of public safety for Portage, assured that emergency personnel are diligently working to ensure the safety of all residents and to prevent anyone from being trapped inside their homes. The community came together in the aftermath of the disaster, with neighbors offering assistance and support to those affected.

Jackie Knerr, a long-time resident of the mobile home community, described the terrifying experience of hearing the tornado approach while she was sitting down for dinner. Her neighbor, Larry Allgaier, was away at a senior center when the tornado struck, but faced challenges returning home due to downed power lines and debris blocking the entrance.

Despite the destruction, stories of resilience and unity emerged as community members rallied together to clean up and support one another. Terry Zeiler, a resident from a neighboring area, brought heavy equipment to help clear roadways and aid in the recovery efforts. The sense of community spirit and solidarity was evident as individuals stepped up to assist in any way they could.

As the city of Portage opened emergency shelters for displaced residents and established a hotline for storm-related inquiries, the focus remained on ensuring the well-being of those affected by the tornado. Governor Gretchen Whitmer declared a state of emergency for several counties in Southwest Michigan, highlighting the widespread impact of the storm.

In times of crisis, the true strength of a community shines through, as individuals come together to support one another and rebuild in the face of adversity. The resilience and unity displayed by the residents of Pavilion Township serve as a testament to the power of community in overcoming challenges and standing strong in the midst of tragedy.
