Flash Flood Warning for Dallas and Tarrant Counties issued by NWS until Sunday night

Flash flood warning issued by NWS for Dallas-Fort Worth area. Take immediate action, avoid flooded roads, and stay safe during heavy rain.

On Sunday evening, the National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning at 6:02 p.m. According to the NWS, Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain in the warned area, with between 1 and 2 inches of rain already fallen and additional amounts of 1 to 2 inches possible. The warning highlighted the ongoing or expected flash flooding of small creeks, urban areas, highways, streets, and underpasses, as well as other low-lying areas.

The areas impacted by this warning included Dallas, Fort Worth, Arlington, Garland, Irving, Grand Prairie, Mesquite, Carrollton, Richardson, Flower Mound, Mansfield, Rowlett, Euless, Desoto, Bedford, Grapevine, Cedar Hill, Haltom City, Wylie, and Keller. The NWS advised residents to "turn around, don't drown" when encountering flooded roads, as most flood-related deaths occur in vehicles. The warning was in effect until 9:15 p.m.

For those residing in flood-prone or low-lying areas, immediate action and seeking higher ground were recommended. Following evacuation instructions promptly, locking homes upon departure, disconnecting utilities and appliances, and avoiding flooded basements or rooms with submerged electrical outlets were key safety measures. If faced with electrical hazards or flooding, moving to higher ground and contacting emergency services was crucial.

During heavy rain, the risk of flooding in low-lying areas is heightened. Driving through floodwaters, even if they appear shallow, is strongly discouraged, as just 12 inches of rushing water can carry away most cars. Hydroplaning, which occurs when a vehicle slides uncontrollably on wet roads, poses a significant risk during heavy rain. Factors such as vehicle speed, water depth, and tire tread depth contribute to the likelihood of hydroplaning.

In the event of hydroplaning, easing off the accelerator, turning into the skid, ensuring tires reconnect with the road, and braking gently were recommended actions to regain control. Following these safety tips and precautions can help mitigate the risks associated with flash flooding and hydroplaning during severe weather conditions.
