Tennessee baseball defeats Evansville in super regional, on verge of College World Series

No. 1 Vols hit four homers to beat Evansville 11-6, one win away from College World Series in back-to-back seasons.

The Tennessee baseball outfielder watched in awe as the decisive blow sailed down the left-field line at Lindsey Nelson Stadium, bringing the Vols one step closer to returning to the College World Series.

In a powerful display, the No. 1 Vols smashed four home runs to defeat Evansville 11-6 in the opening game of the Knoxville Super Regional. This victory puts Tennessee within reach of Omaha for the second consecutive season, a historic achievement for the program.

With a record of 54-11, the Vols are on the cusp of matching their 1995 team for the second-most wins in program history. The 2022 squad holds the record with 57 wins. UT is now aiming for their third College World Series appearance in four years.

The top of the lineup delivered big for the Vols, with Ensley launching a three-run homer in the seventh inning to seal the win. Burke kick-started the home run barrage with a solo shot in the first, followed by Moore's two-run blast in the third and Amick's solo homer in the same inning.

Despite their offensive firepower, Tennessee faced a setback in the fifth inning due to an error, allowing Evansville to tie the game. However, pitcher AJ Causey showcased his resilience by pitching out of trouble in the sixth inning, striking out eight batters in 4⅔ innings.

As the game tightened in the ninth, reliever Aaron Combs stepped up to the plate, striking out three consecutive batters with the bases loaded to secure the victory for the Vols.

With a stellar performance on both offense and defense, Tennessee now looks ahead to the next game against Evansville, with the opportunity to clinch a spot in the College World Series within their grasp.
