Flooding Rapidan Dam Minnesota Imminent Failure Condition What Know
Millions under heat alerts as record-breaking temperatures hit East Coast. Rapidan Dam in Minnesota faces imminent failure, leading to flood emergency.
Millions of people are currently under heat alerts as record-breaking temperatures threaten parts of the East Coast. The Rapidan Dam in Blue Earth County, Minnesota is facing an "imminent failure condition," as reported by the county government on their official Facebook page.
According to the post, accumulating debris at the dam was discovered on Sunday, prompting monitoring by Blue Earth County Public Works, Emergency Management, and Sheriffs Offices. The county government emphasized the uncertainty of the dam's future, stating that it may fail completely or remain in place. As a precaution, downstream residents, regulatory agencies, and local authorities were notified.
The county government also mentioned that the river has eroded significantly around the west side of the dam, with additional debris from Xcel Energy and county infrastructure. Power outages have been reported, and efforts are underway to address the situation. The County Road 33 bridge and County Road 90 bridge are being closely watched for any debris passing downstream and may be closed.
The Rapidan Dam, constructed between 1908 and 1910, spans about 475 feet in length and stands approximately 87 feet from the top of the dam to the stream bed. While the dam is currently intact and no evacuation order is in place for Blue Earth County residents, those in immediate danger have been notified.
In addition to the dam concerns, communities in the northern and central Plains are facing ongoing flood threats as rivers continue to rise. Record-breaking floods over the weekend have left areas vulnerable to more rain this week. Scattered showers are expected early in the week, with heavier rain forecasted by Thursday. The National Weather Service warns of the potential for more flooding as rivers swell from the recent downpours.
Meanwhile, North Mankato, Minnesota has declared a flood emergency as city crews work to build a temporary earth wall levee to protect the city from potential Rapidan Dam failure. The river level is rising rapidly, prompting road closures and continuous monitoring for the safety of North Mankato residents. The situation remains fluid as authorities take necessary precautions to safeguard the community.
