In February 2022, the Maple Leafs announced that Amirov had been diagnosed with a brain tumor. He was undergoing treatment in Germany and would miss the remainder of the NHL season. Despite his diagnosis, Amirov remained determined to return to professional hockey and continued to skate and work out regularly.

Amirov suffered an injury while playing for Salavat Ufa at the start of the 2021-2022 KHL season. This led to the discovery of new, unrelated symptoms, prompting further investigation. After months of extensive tests, the tumor was found.
