Los Angeles Chargers vs. Minnesota Vikings: First quarter recap and second quarter discussion
The Minnesota Vikings are trailing the Los Angeles Chargers 7-0 after the first quarter at U.S. Bank Stadium.
The first quarter of the game at U.S. Bank Stadium has come to a close, and unfortunately, the Minnesota Vikings find themselves behind the Los Angeles Chargers with a score of 7-0. The Vikings won the coin toss but chose to defer, allowing the Chargers to have the first possession of the game. The Chargers attempted a couple of running plays early on, but a holding penalty set them back, resulting in a three-and-out drive. The Vikings then gained possession of the ball at their own 43-yard line.
It was Alexander Mattison who kick-started the Vikings' offense with two carries for a total of 15 yards. Notably, one of these carries marked the first time this season that the team had gained 10 or more yards in a single carry. Mattison continued to impress, accumulating 31 rushing yards, surpassing his total from the entire Week 2 game against Philadelphia. However, the Vikings' unfortunate trend of losing fumbles continued when T.J. Hockenson had the ball stripped from him after making a first-down catch and fighting for extra yardage.
Following the turnover, the Chargers capitalized on the opportunity and advanced into Minnesota territory. Their drive culminated in a 3-yard touchdown pass from Justin Herbert to Donald Parham, giving the Chargers an early 7-0 lead.
The Vikings had another chance to respond on their subsequent possession and managed to move into Los Angeles territory. However, Kirk Cousins was sacked on third down, and it appears that the Vikings will be forced to punt as the second quarter begins.
As we head into the second quarter of play, the Minnesota Vikings trail the Los Angeles Chargers by a score of 7-0. Stay tuned and join us as the game continues to unfold at U.S. Bank Stadium.
