Billy Porter booed on DWTS for telling Jason Mraz to stop mouthing along
Billy Porter advises Jason Mraz to stop singing along during his performances on Dancing With the Stars, sparking controversy.
Billy Porter, a guest judge for season 32 of Dancing With the Stars, had some advice for contestant Jason Mraz during the Whitney Houston episode. Mraz and his partner Daniella Karagach performed a samba to "Higher Love" by Kygo and Houston, but Porter found Mraz's tendency to sing along or mouth the words during his performance distracting. He advised Mraz to save that for Broadway and focus on telling a story solely through dance for the competition show. Despite some boos from the audience, Porter awarded Mraz a score of 8 for the performance, leading to a total score of 33 out of 40 for the duo.
It's worth noting that Mraz has actually been on Broadway before, stepping into the role of Dr. Pomatter in Waitress for a limited 10-week run in 2017. He also appeared on composer Sara Bareilles' concept album, singing Dr. Pomatter's songs. Porter, on the other hand, is a Tony Award-winning Broadway star for his portrayal of Lola in Kinky Boots.
Despite the critique from Porter, Mraz and Karagach received a solid score for their performance. Dancing With the Stars airs on Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC and Disney+ and streams the following day on Hulu.
