Dan Shulman's broadcasting journey began at a modest radio station, leading to a prestigious Ford C. Frick Award nomination.
Dan Shulman, a well-known sports broadcaster, began his journey in broadcasting as a first-year mathematics student at the University of Western Ontario. His initial interest in sports writing led him to the Western Gazette, but after encountering a long line of applicants, he turned his attention to the campus radio station, Radio Western. This decision set the stage for Shulman's successful career in broadcasting.
Starting with play-by-play duties for varsity sports at CHRW, Shulman's early radio days paved the way for his eventual rise to prominence in the broadcasting world. His work as a broadcaster for the Toronto Blue Jays on Sportsnet has earned him a nomination for the prestigious Ford C. Frick Award, which recognizes excellence in baseball broadcasting.
Reflecting on his time at Western, Shulman recalls calling Mustangs basketball, football, and hockey games, as well as co-hosting a talk show. Despite the challenges and occasional pranks from friends, he found his experience in radio to be a valuable part of his college years.
After briefly pursuing a career in actuarial work, Shulman returned to broadcasting and began working at CKBB in Barrie, Ontario. His dedication and talent eventually led to opportunities with TSN, ESPN, and Sportsnet, where he currently calls MLB games.
With nearly 30 years of experience in the industry, Shulman remains passionate about his work and continues to find joy in broadcasting. His nomination for the Frick Award is a testament to his impact on baseball broadcasting, and he is deeply honored to be considered among such a distinguished group of nominees.
The Frick winner will be celebrated during the Hall of Fame Weekend in Cooperstown, N.Y., marking a significant milestone in Shulman's illustrious career. As he looks forward to the future, he remains grateful for the opportunities that have shaped his journey as a sports broadcaster.
