Stacy Wakefield, former Red Sox pitcher Tim Wakefield's widow, dies 5 months after husband
Stacy Wakefield, widow of former Red Sox pitcher Tim Wakefield, dies of pancreatic cancer nearly five months after his passing.
Stacy Wakefield, the wife of former Red Sox pitcher Tim Wakefield, has passed away just five months after her husband's death, her family announced on Wednesday. She was 53 years old.
In a statement released by the Boston Red Sox, her family expressed deep sadness at the loss of their beloved mother, daughter, sister, niece, and aunt. Stacy passed away at her home in Massachusetts, surrounded by family, friends, caretakers, and nurses. The family described the loss as unimaginable, especially coming so soon after Tim's death.
Stacy Wakefield had been battling pancreatic cancer, a diagnosis that was made public less than a week before Tim's death from brain cancer at the age of 57 last October. The family had faced criticism for the public disclosure of their health issues by Tim's ex-teammate Curt Schilling.
Tim Wakefield, known for his legendary knuckleball skills, was a World Series champion and a prominent Major League player, retiring in 2012 after 19 years in the MLB, 17 of them with the Red Sox. Both Tim and Stacy were active in community service and supported various charitable causes, including the Red Sox Foundation and the Jimmy Fund childhood cancer charity.
The Wakefields leave behind two children, Trevor and Brianna, who are now in their 20s. The family remembered Stacy as a strong, loving, thoughtful, and kind person who was down-to-earth. They find comfort in the belief that she has been reunited with Tim, the love of her life.
