Actress Jane Seymour speaks about late friend Christopher Reeve at Oscar Wilde Awards, highlighting his inspiring legacy and advocacy work.
At the annual Oscar Wilde Awards hosted by the US-Ireland Alliance, actress Jane Seymour shared her thoughts on the documentary Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story, which premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival. Seymour fondly remembered Reeve as an amazing, fearless, and bright individual who enjoyed flying airplanes, sailing boats, and riding horses. The two actors were close friends and also starred together in the 1980 film Somewhere in Time.
Reflecting on Reeve's life after a tragic horseback riding accident in 1995 that left him paralyzed and dependent on a ventilator until his passing in 2004, Seymour emphasized the challenges he faced, particularly the loss of independence. She highlighted Reeve's determination to help others in similar situations, referencing his memoir Still Me and his efforts to advance stem-cell research for spinal cord injuries.
Seymour praised Reeve's commitment to making a difference and his refusal to accept the limitations imposed on individuals with spinal injuries. She noted his advocacy for the community and how he used his energy, intellect, and visibility to push for progress in research and treatment.
The documentary also features interviews with Reeve's children and late wife Dana, who passed away from lung cancer in 2006. Their children continue to carry on their parents' legacy through the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation, dedicated to finding a cure for spinal cord injuries.
