Olympic wrestler Gable Steveson signs Bills
Olympic gold medalist Gable Steveson signs with Buffalo Bills, transitioning from wrestling to football. Exciting new chapter for the athlete.
Olympic gold medalist Gable Steveson has decided to take a break from the wrestling mat and step onto the football field. His agent, Carter Chow of Red Envelope Sports, confirmed to ESPN that Steveson will be signing a standard three-year rookie contract with the Buffalo Bills. The team made the official announcement on Friday, welcoming the 5-foot-11, 266-pound athlete to their roster after he impressed during a workout on May 15. Steveson is expected to join the defensive line, bringing his exceptional skills and determination to a new sport.
After achieving gold in the super heavyweight division of freestyle wrestling at the 2020 Tokyo Games, as well as winning multiple national and Big Ten championships during his time at Minnesota, Steveson is now eager to test his abilities on the football field. In a statement to ESPN, he expressed his gratitude to Coach Sean McDermott, general manager Brandon Beane, and the entire Buffalo Bills organization for giving him this opportunity to pursue a new challenge.
Steveson's impressive wrestling career, which includes being a two-time recipient of the prestigious Dan Hodge Trophy, has prepared him well for the transition to football. Despite being released by WWE earlier in the month, Steveson remains focused on his athletic journey and is determined to make a mark in his new sport.
In addition to Steveson's signing, the Bills also announced the release of punter Matt Haack on the same day. Haack, who played for the Cleveland Browns last season before joining the Bills, has a solid career average of 44.5 yards per punt in nearly 100 games across multiple teams. His departure marks a new chapter for both him and the Bills as they continue to make moves in preparation for the upcoming season.
