Emmy Nominations 2023: Exploring the Full List, From Succession to The Last of Us
2023 Emmy nominations: 'Succession' leads with 27 nods, 'The Last of Us' recognized.
The 2023 Emmy nominations were announced last night by Yvette Nicole Brown, star of the show Neighborhood. HBO's hit drama Succession season 4 received a staggering 27 nominations, including nods for best actor/actress for Brian Cox, Jeremy Strong, Kieran Culkin, and Sarah Snook in the Drama category. Following closely behind was The Last of Us with 24 nominations, making it the first live-action video game adaptation to be recognized by the TV Academy. Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, the leads of the show, also earned their Outstanding Actor/Actress nods, with co-creator Craig Mazin securing a spot for best direction.
The standout episode of The Last of Us, titled "Long, Long Time," written by Peter Hoar, received praise for crafting a wholesome queer romance story and improved upon the source material. The episode's main actors, Nick Offerman and Murray Bartlett, also received nominations in the Best Guest Actor category.
In third place, by a small margin, is the second season of The White Lotus, which received 23 nominations, including nods for Best Drama Series, writing, direction, and supporting roles. It's understandable why none of the cast members were listed among the best actor/actress spots, as they shared an equal amount of screen time. It's great to see HBO once again dominating the Emmy Awards with their high-quality lineup of shows. However, it was surprising to see House of the Dragon, the Game of Thrones prequel spin-off, only receiving one nomination for Outstanding Drama Series. None of the actors were recognized, not even Paddy Considine, who played King Viserys in the series.
Three shows from the Star Wars universe also made it onto the Emmy's list. Andor received three nominations, including Best Drama and Best Direction, with Beau Willimon winning for Best Writing. The Mandalorian and the forgettable Obi-Wan Kenobi secured nominations for technical achievements such as costumes, cinematography, and stunts. The latter was also nominated in the Best Limited Series category.
The 75th annual Emmys are scheduled to stream live from the Peacock Theater on Tuesday, September 19 at 5:30 am IST on Lionsgate Play. In the US, the awards show will take place on Monday, September 18 at 5 pm PT, although the host has not been announced yet. There is still a chance for the event to be postponed due to the ongoing writer's strike in Hollywood. Additionally, the ongoing contract negotiations between SAG-AFTRA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers could lead to an actor's strike in the coming weeks.
