US Endures Heat Waves, Poor Air Quality, and Severe Storms as Acute Weather Conditions Persist Nationwide
Deadly weather conditions affect millions across the US with extreme heat, poor air quality, and severe storms.
Millions of Americans are currently facing potentially life-threatening weather conditions across the country. From extreme heat and poor air quality to severe storms and flash flooding, various regions are being heavily impacted. Heat alerts have been issued for over 80 million Americans in 14 states, stretching from Washington to Florida. In Death Valley, California, temperatures may reach a staggering 130 degrees, which hasn't been seen since 2021. Other areas experiencing record-breaking heat include Phoenix, Tucson, Tampa, Fort Myers, and Key West.
In the Northeast, a flood watch has been issued for more than 56 million people as heavy rain causes flash flooding in Virginia, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey. El Paso, Texas, has been enduring 100-degree days for 30 consecutive days, breaking previous records. Daily record-high temperatures are expected to be broken in at least 38 cities across the country, including Palm Springs, Fresno, Sacramento, Flagstaff, Las Vegas, El Paso, Houston, Austin, Corpus Christi, and Salt Lake City.
The South is also grappling with scorching temperatures, with heat indexes along the Gulf Coast predicted to exceed 110 degrees in the coming week. Miami has been placed under an excessive heat warning, with the heat index expected to reach 112 degrees. Additionally, smoke from the ongoing wildfires in Canada is making its way eastward, reaching cities like Cleveland and eastern Kentucky.
Air quality has been significantly affected, particularly in areas like Chicago, which currently has some of the worst air quality in the world. Flash flooding has already caused havoc in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, with over 3 inches of rain leading to fatal consequences. The Northeast is at a higher risk of flash floods due to saturated ground from continuous rainfall. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Weather Prediction Center has issued a moderate risk advisory for excessive rainfall from Maine to Delaware, including major cities like New York City and Philadelphia.
Furthermore, a tornado watch has been issued for millions of people in the Northeast, including parts of Long Island, New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and southern Maine. Severe thunderstorm warnings have already been in effect in these areas. The strongest storms are expected to pass through the Northeast in the morning and afternoon, with some lingering activity in upstate New York and Vermont.
