Ron DeSantis demands Ilhan Omar thrown out of Congress and deported
DeSantis demands Omar be deported after she says her main priority as a lawmaker is representing Somalia. Video went viral.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has called for the deportation and stripping of U.S. citizenship of Rep. Ilhan Omar, who declared that Somalia's interests are her top priority. DeSantis' demands are the most severe in the backlash that followed Omar's statement, with Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene labeling her a 'terrorist sympathizer' and Donald Trump Jr. lamenting that the U.S. is not among her top three priorities.
Omar, who emigrated from Somalia in 1995, is a member of the progressive squad of lawmakers in the House. She stated in a speech in Minneapolis that Somalia is her primary concern when legislating in Congress, with Islam as her second priority. DeSantis posted a video of Omar's speech and demanded she be expelled from Congress, denaturalized, and deported.
Donald Trump Jr. also criticized Omar for not naming the U.S. among her top priorities. He expressed concern about the lack of representation from Congress and accused Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of being out of touch with average Americans. Calls for Omar's resignation have come from various figures, including Somaliland Ambassador Rhoda Elmi, who called her remarks 'unbecoming' and 'lacking in common decency.'
Omar's speech has been met with widespread criticism, with some accusing her of treason and demanding her removal from Congress. This is not the first time that calls have been made for Omar's removal from her position in the U.S. House of Representatives, as her previous remarks have led to similar demands and censure resolutions from colleagues.
